There are some new search engines taking full advantage of the benefits of representing data visually. Google is nice, but it’s still a one-dimensional text-based search engine with links (aside from Google’s Wonder Wheel which is not the primary focus of their search engine). These new search engines are providing a more robust visual representation of data. This, I believe, is the future of search. Like mindmapping, these search engines help us quickly process and understand information visually which is how our brains actually work.
Michael Deutch, Mindjet Chief Evangelist, recently wrote a great blog post on The Mindjet Blog highlighting these new visual search engines. In the post he points out, “If a picture is worth a thousand words, viewing your search results visually can accelerate save you time while processing your results. Scrolling through long textual listings is time consuming, monotonous and eye-straining.”
